Probability Basics
Probability describes how likely an event is to occur. It provides a way to measure chance, whether you’re rolling dice, drawing cards, or thinking about everyday outcomes. Once you understand how probability works, uncertainty becomes easier to interpret.
The basic probability formula
Probability compares the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes. The formula is:
Probability = favorable outcomes / total outcomes
A simple example
If a box contains 3 red balls and 7 blue balls, the probability of drawing a red ball is:
3 / 10 = 0.3
That value can also be expressed as 30%.
Probability values
Probability ranges from 0 to 1. A probability of 0 means an event cannot happen. A probability of 1 means it is certain. Values in between represent varying degrees of likelihood.
Common misconceptions
- “Probability predicts exact outcomes.” It describes likelihood, not certainty.
- “A higher probability guarantees the event.” Even likely events can fail to occur.
- “Probability only applies to games.” It applies to many real‑world situations.
Probability offers a simple way to understand chance. Once you see how outcomes relate to totals, the math becomes intuitive and easy to apply.
