Standard Deviation

Standard deviation measures how spread out values are in a dataset. It shows how much numbers differ from the mean. Once you understand how it works, variation becomes much easier to interpret.

The basic idea

A low standard deviation means values are close to the mean. A high standard deviation means values are more spread out. It’s a way of quantifying consistency or variability.

The standard deviation formula

The formula looks like this in simplified form:

SD = √( Σ(x − mean)² / n )

It measures the average distance of each value from the mean.

A simple example

If most values in a dataset are close together, the standard deviation will be small. If values vary widely, the standard deviation will be larger.

Common misconceptions

Standard deviation provides a clear way to understand variation. Once you see how values differ from the mean, the concept becomes intuitive.
