Weight and Mass Basics

Weight and mass describe related but different physical ideas. Mass measures how much matter an object contains. Weight measures the force of gravity acting on that mass. Understanding the difference helps make sense of scales, measurements, and physical behavior.

What mass means

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It does not change based on location. Common units include grams and kilograms.

What weight means

Weight is the force of gravity pulling on mass. Because gravity can vary, weight can change depending on where the object is. The basic formula is:

Weight = mass × gravitational acceleration

A simple example

An object with a mass of 10 kilograms has the same mass everywhere. But its weight changes depending on gravity. On Earth, it weighs more than it would on the Moon.

Common misconceptions

Weight and mass are closely related but not identical. Once you understand how gravity affects weight, the distinction becomes clear and intuitive.
